Arbor Tree Service provides tree removal, pruning, stump service, tree preservation, crane-assisted removal and 24/7 emergency tree service in Brookline, MA. The company reports more than 30 years of tree-industry experience, trained certified tree professionals, and full licensing and insurance.
Brookline tree work has another layer that many Massachusetts communities do not: the Town’s current Tree Preservation By-law protects private trees six inches DBH and larger across the property. Removing a protected tree generally requires a Tree Impact and Removal Permit before work starts. Public shade trees, wetlands, historic properties and electrical lines follow separate rules.
Call Arbor Tree Service at (781) 245-2826 for a free estimate. For a fallen tree, split trunk, blocked driveway or unstable storm-damaged tree, 24/7 emergency tree service is available.
Professional Tree Services in Brookline, MA
Arbor Tree Service handles residential and commercial tree work ranging from routine pruning to large removals in confined spaces.
Tree Removal
Professional tree removal is appropriate when major root failure, extensive trunk decay, severe splitting, a dead crown or major storm damage makes retention unreasonable. In Brookline, check permit status before cutting a protected private tree six inches DBH or larger.
Tree Trimming and Pruning
Tree trimming and pruning can address deadwood, roof clearance, weak branch structure, overextended limbs and storm damage. Good pruning removes specific branches for a defined reason instead of thinning the entire crown indiscriminately.
Tree Preservation
A mature tree near a house does not automatically need removal. Arbor’s tree preservation service covers assessment, pruning, soil management, pest and disease management and structural support when the tree can reasonably remain.
Stump Service
Arbor provides stump grinding and stump removal. Grinding takes the stump below ground level while leaving much of the root system in place. Full stump removal addresses the stump and primary roots when the site needs more complete clearance.
Crane-Assisted Removal
Large trees over houses, garages, fences and narrow yards can be evaluated for crane-assisted tree removal. A crane allows sections to be lifted away from structures instead of lowered through an already crowded yard.
Emergency Tree Removal & 24/7 Storm Response
Arbor Tree Service provides emergency tree service 24 hours a day, including nights and weekends.
Call for immediate assessment when a tree has fallen on a structure, started uprooting, developed a fresh trunk split, left a large limb suspended over an occupied area or blocked critical property access.
Arbor’s emergency process includes rapid dispatch, on-site assessment, securing the work area, controlled removal and cleanup. Urgent calls are prioritized.
There is no published guarantee that every Brookline emergency will be completed the same day. The confirmed service is 24/7 availability with priority given to active hazards.
If wires are down or a tree is touching electrical equipment, stay away and contact Eversource first.
Tree Removal Permits & Brookline Regulations
Yes. Brookline requires a Tree Impact and Removal Permit before removing a protected private tree. The current Tree Preservation By-law took effect March 27, 2025 and applies to trees across private property, not only trees near property lines.
A Protected Tree is generally any existing tree measuring 6 inches DBH or larger, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. A replacement tree planted to satisfy mitigation also remains protected even before reaching six inches.
You also need a Tree Impact and Removal Permit when construction, demolition or certain excavation work is planned within 30 feet of a protected tree, including qualifying trees on an adjacent property.
Review Brookline’s current requirements on the Town’s Tree Protection & Removal page before scheduling work.
Dead, Hazardous and Diseased Trees
A dead or hazardous tree six inches DBH or larger still requires a permit. The difference is mitigation: Brookline can waive the replacement requirement when a currently Certified Arborist confirms in writing that the tree is dead, unviable or hazardous.
The Town accepts documentation such as an ISA Basic Risk Assessment form, an arborist cover letter with credentials and written assessment, or a written and visual assessment report.
Trees with permanent disease or insect infestation can receive the same mitigation exemption when the condition is confirmed by a Certified Arborist.
Tree Replacement and Mitigation
Removing a healthy protected tree can require substantial replacement planting or payment to Brookline’s Tree Preservation Fund.
| Tree Removed | Required Mitigation |
|---|---|
| Less than 25″ DBH | Same DBH removed |
| 25″ to under 40″ DBH | 1.5 × DBH |
| 40″ to under 55″ DBH | 2 × DBH |
| 55″ DBH or larger | 3 × DBH |
Any mitigation shortfall is currently calculated at $500 per DBH inch not replaced. That makes permit planning especially important before removing a large healthy tree.
Stormwater Rules Can Add Another Review
Brookline’s Stormwater Management By-law also applies when trees eight inches DBH or larger have a combined DBH of 32 inches or more, or when the project involves 2,500 square feet or more of land disturbance. An erosion and sediment control plan is then part of the review.
Public Shade Trees
Do not privately remove a Brookline public shade tree. Public shade trees are regulated under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 87.
A removal request begins with a written request to the Brookline Tree Warden. The process normally includes a public hearing before the Tree Warden and Tree Planting Committee.
The Town specifically states that public trees are not removed simply because they shed leaves or acorns, shade private property or have become large.
See Brookline’s Public Shade Tree Removal guidance before touching a roadside tree whose ownership is unclear.
What About the “Brookline Tree Preservation Commission”?
Brookline’s current Town structure does not identify an official board called the Brookline Tree Preservation Commission. Private protected-tree applications are handled through the Tree Preservation By-law program. Public shade-tree removals involve the Tree Warden and Tree Planting Committee. Historic-property review is handled by the Brookline Preservation Commission.
Stump Grinding & Complete Site Cleanup
Yes, Arbor clears tree-removal debris from the property. Its published tree-removal process states that branches, logs and wood waste are removed during final cleanup.
Stump work is separate from cutting down the tree unless the written scope includes it.
Stump grinding reduces the stump below ground level. Roots remain in the soil and decompose. This is useful when the goal is lawn restoration or eliminating the visible stump.
If you want to plant another tree in exactly the same location, install construction or completely clear the root zone, full stump removal may provide a better site than ordinary grinding because it extracts the stump and primary roots.
Ask the estimator to specify:
- whether logs and brush are hauled away;
- whether chips remain or are removed;
- whether stump grinding is included;
- how far below grade the planned work will go; and
- whether the site will be filled and leveled afterward.
Tree Pruning for Historic Properties
Brookline’s mature canopy is part of the character of neighborhoods such as Chestnut Hill, Cottage Farm, Harvard Avenue and Pill Hill. Large trees around older houses often share limited space with stone walls, narrow drives, roofs, sidewalks and established gardens.
Pruning on these properties should focus on the branch creating the problem. Deadwood can be removed. Clearance can be restored around a roof or walkway. An overextended limb can be shortened selectively. A mature crown should not be stripped simply to create a dramatic visual difference.
Brookline’s local historic districts have their own review process through the Brookline Preservation Commission. The Town states that most exterior building changes and some landscape alterations in a local historic district require review. Ordinary pruning is not automatically described as a historic-district permit project, but broader landscape alterations should be checked before work starts.
Historic property owners can review the Town’s Local Historic District guidance.
Crane-Assisted Removal for Tight Spaces
Large trees can be removed from tight Brookline properties without felling the entire tree in one piece.
Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village and Washington Square contain compact development where houses, multifamily buildings, streets, parked vehicles, sidewalks and utilities can leave little usable drop space.
Crane-assisted removal can lift branches or trunk sections away from those targets. Conventional climbing and rigging can also work when crane access is poor.
The planning process considers tree size, trunk condition, crane reach, setup position, overhead obstructions, landing area and the path used to remove logs and branches from the property.
The equipment should follow the site. A crane is useful when it creates better control; it is not automatically required because a tree is tall.
Tree Work Near Power Lines in Brookline
Eversource is Brookline’s electric distribution utility.
Eversource maintains vegetation around roadside distribution lines and high-voltage corridors. Property owners are generally responsible for trees around the service line running from the utility pole to a home or business.
If a branch is touching an energized line or a tree has fallen into electrical equipment, stay away and contact Eversource. Downed wires should be treated as energized.
Eversource directs property owners to use a qualified tree professional for vegetation near private service lines. Arbor’s current public site does not publish a specific utility line-clearance credential, so this page does not claim one.
See Eversource vegetation responsibility guidance before arranging work close to electrical lines.

ISA Certified Arborist vs. Massachusetts Certified Arborist
ISA Certified Arborist and Massachusetts Certified Arborist are separate credentials.
The International Society of Arboriculture administers ISA Certified Arborist credentials. The Massachusetts Arborists Association administers the Massachusetts Certified Arborist program.
Arbor’s site describes trained certified tree professionals. This page does not attribute Massachusetts Certified Arborist status to a specific Arbor employee because no verified MCA name or certification number was supplied.
Our Brookline Service Area: All Neighborhoods
Arbor can provide tree-service estimates throughout Brookline, including Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, Washington Square and Chestnut Hill, along with surrounding residential areas.
Coolidge Corner
Coolidge Corner centers around Beacon Street and Harvard Street. The area’s compact development and high pedestrian activity can make work-zone planning, sidewalk clearance and controlled branch movement important on larger jobs.
Brookline Village
Brookline Village combines older residential properties with civic, commercial and transit activity around Washington and Harvard Streets. Mature trees near houses, sidewalks and public ways need clear ownership and access planning before removal.
Washington Square
Washington Square follows the Beacon Street corridor. Closely spaced buildings and developed lots can favor sectional dismantling over conventional tree felling.
Chestnut Hill
Chestnut Hill has more suburban residential conditions than Brookline’s denser northern districts. Larger lots can improve equipment access, but mature trees, historic properties, slopes and regulated wetlands can still change the work plan.
Brookline’s Urban Trees and Growing Conditions
Brookline’s urban forest planning documents identify red maple, red oak, river birch, American elm and many other species suitable for the Town’s streets and landscapes. A Brookline mini-forest planted at Brookline Avenue Playground also includes white pine, tulip tree, red maple and red oak.
Urban trees face conditions that forest-grown trees do not. Brookline specifically identifies limited rooting volume, summer heat from pavement, road salt, foot traffic and soil compaction as common stressors for street trees.
That context matters when deciding whether a declining tree needs pruning, soil improvement, preservation work or removal. Crown symptoms can reflect problems below ground.
Wetlands and Conservation Commission Review
Tree and vegetation work near Brookline wetlands requires Conservation Commission review.
Brookline protects a broader area than the basic Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act in several situations. The Town’s by-law protects isolated wetlands, vernal pools and intermittent streams and increases the local wetland buffer to 150 feet.
The Town states that work within 100 feet of a wetland resource or 200 feet of a perennial stream must be reviewed and approved by the Conservation Commission. Vegetation disturbance or removal is specifically included.
Small buffer-zone projects may qualify for a Request for Determination of Applicability, while larger work or activity close to a resource area can require a Notice of Intent.
Check Brookline’s Wetlands Protection guidance before sending equipment into a wet area or removing vegetation near a protected resource.
Free Consultation & Fully Insured Crews
Arbor offers free estimates and states that it is fully licensed and insured.
The company’s current website does not publish liability policy limits or workers’ compensation certificates. Liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance are different types of coverage. Property owners, condominium associations and commercial managers who require documentation should request a current certificate before work begins.
A useful written estimate should identify the tree, the work being performed, access restrictions, debris handling, stump work and cleanup. For Brookline, the estimate should also identify whether the owner must complete a Tree Impact and Removal Permit before the crew arrives.
How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in Brookline?
A reasonable 2026 Greater Boston planning range is roughly $432 to $2,166 for most tree removals, with an average around $812. These are regional estimates, not Arbor Tree Service prices.
Brookline jobs can exceed that range when a large tree is located above a house, in a narrow backyard, beside utility infrastructure or where crane access and controlled rigging are required.
Brookline’s permit and mitigation requirements can also affect the total project budget. Removing a healthy protected tree can require replanting or Tree Preservation Fund contributions separate from the contractor’s price.
