Crane service for tree removal handles the jobs standard rigging can’t do safely. When a tree is too big, too close to the house, or sitting in a backyard with no room to drop wood, a crane lifts it out in controlled sections instead of felling it. Nothing swings. Nothing free-falls. Every piece leaves the property straight up and over.
Arbor Tree Service runs crane picks across Georgetown and eastern Massachusetts on removals that would otherwise put a roof, fence, septic field, or twenty years of landscaping at risk. If a climber would need forty cuts to lower wood into a ten-foot gap, a crane usually finishes the same tree in a morning with far less damage to the yard.
What crane-assisted tree removal actually involves
A crane removal takes the tree apart from the top down while the crane holds the weight. The climber or bucket operator sets a rigging point above the cut, the crane takes tension, the cut is made, and the section is flown out to a drop zone in the driveway or street.
The difference from a conventional removal is control. In a standard tree removal, wood is lowered on ropes through the canopy and lands on the ground you’re trying to protect. With a crane, the wood never touches the yard. That matters most on tight lots, over septic systems and pools, and on trees that have already lost enough structure to be unpredictable.
When a crane is the right call
- No landing zone. Backyards boxed in by fences, sheds, pools, or neighboring houses.
- Trees over structures. Anything leaning toward a roof, garage, deck, or driveway.
- Dead or storm-damaged wood. Hollow trunks and cracked leaders are not safe to climb. The crane keeps the crew off the tree entirely.
- Oversized trees. Mature oaks, maples, and pines where individual limbs weigh more than a rope system should carry.
- No equipment access. Narrow side yards where a bucket truck or lift can’t reach, but a crane can boom over the house.
Storm work often falls into this category. If a tree came down overnight and is resting on a structure, that’s an emergency tree service call, and the crane is frequently the fastest way to get the load off the house without making it worse.
What you get from a crane pick
Controlled loads, start to finish
Each section is secured before the saw touches it. The crane owns the weight the entire time, so there’s no shock loading, no swing into siding, and no wood bouncing where it shouldn’t.
Less repair work afterward
Ruts, broken irrigation heads, cracked pavers, and flattened beds are the hidden cost of a conventional removal. Flying the wood out skips most of that.
Fewer days on site
A removal that would take a climbing crew two or three days often comes down in one. That’s less disruption for you and fewer hours billed against the job.
Precision in tight spots
The crane reaches where trucks can’t. Trees between two houses, behind a stone wall, or on the far side of a septic field are all workable from the street.
How we run a crane job
1. Site assessment
We walk the property before quoting. Tree size and condition, distance to structures, overhead lines, soil conditions, and where a crane can legally and safely set up. If a crane isn’t the right tool, we’ll say so and price it as a standard removal instead.
2. Setup and staging
Placement decides everything. Outriggers go down on cribbing to spread the load and protect pavement. We confirm reach and weight against the load chart, set the drop zone, and brief the crew on the swing path before anyone leaves the ground.
3. Rigging the pick
Slings and shackles are set above the cut line so the section balances the way we want it to. This is the part that separates crane work from lifting heavy objects: the pick point determines whether the piece hangs level or rolls when it comes free.
4. Cutting and flying
The cut is made under tension. The section lifts clear of the canopy, travels over the house or fence, and lands in the drop zone. Then the process repeats down the tree until only the stump is left.
5. Cleanup and haul-off
Logs are bucked and loaded, brush goes through the chipper, and the work area is raked and blown before we leave. If you want the stump gone too, we can add stump removal to the same visit rather than scheduling a second trip.
Projects that typically require a crane
- Large-tree removal. Mature hardwoods and pines with sections too heavy to lower by rope.
- Removals near structures. Trees over houses, garages, additions, pools, and utility connections.
- Hazard trees. Dead, hollow, split, or storm-loaded trees that can’t be safely climbed.
- Confined-space removals. Fenced backyards and city lots with no room to fell or drop.
- Multi-tree clearing. Larger jobs where the crane speeds up work alongside land clearing.
Protecting your property during the lift
Most of the damage on a tree job happens on the ground, not in the air. We plan the crane position and the swing path around what you can’t replace: the roofline, the septic field, mature plantings, stone walls, and the driveway apron. Cribbing under the outriggers spreads the load. Mats or plywood go down if equipment has to cross turf. The drop zone gets set where wood can land hard without consequence.
Trees that don’t need to come out at all get a different conversation. If the goal is clearance over the roof or reducing weight on a leaning limb, tree trimming or a tree preservation plan is often the better answer, and cheaper than a removal.
Why crane work belongs to a trained crew
Running a crane on a tree job is not the same as lifting steel. The load is uneven, alive, and changes weight as the saw goes through it. The operator works from the load chart, the rigger sets the pick, and the ground crew signals and controls the drop zone. Everyone has to read the same plan.
That coordination is the whole job. Get the pick point wrong and the section rolls. Set up in the wrong spot and you’re at the edge of the chart on the last lift, which is exactly when you don’t want to be. Our crew plans each pick before the cut and works the sequence the same way every time.
Crane service across eastern Massachusetts
We’re based at 2 Industrial Way in Georgetown and run crane removals throughout the North Shore and Merrimack Valley, including Georgetown, Andover, North Andover, Haverhill, Ipswich, Beverly, Newburyport, Tewksbury, Billerica, and Lowell.
Schedule your crane service
Send a couple of photos of the tree and what’s around it, and we can usually tell you on the spot whether it’s a crane job or a climb. Estimates are on site, and the quote includes the crane, the crew, and the cleanup, with no line items added after the fact.
Call (781) 245-2826 or request an estimate and we’ll get you on the schedule.
